The Joy of Having a Friend Who Nourishes My Spirit

Hello There, VivBounty here to share the joy of having a friend who nourishes my spirit. It is now 16°C outside at almost 6 p.m. and the sun is shining brightly even as it moves over the garden to setting in the West.

Having some errands to run in the city today, something my husband and I normally do together, I was up early but not as early as usual. It’s funny this morning on a day when I had a full day planned, Leihla, our greyhound slept later than usual. I had not set an alarm as she usually wakes me up about 6:30 a.m. but today let me sleep until 7:40 a.m. Quite startled I jumped up and dressed to take her outside.

We braved a long walk this morning because I knew we’d be out for a good few hours. Returning from the lovely spring like morning air, we got back to find “Daddy” still in bed. It’s cold and flu season and I thought he had managed to side step it but it is not to be. He had coughed all night and was exhausted. Leaving him to nurse his “bug” we carried on with the morning routine, feeding Leihla and Scampy, our cat and I decided I would go into the city alone.

I rarely miss my morning spiritual routine and my energy was flowing nicely as I envisioned my day. I had made plans with my “birthday sister”, that is, we share the same birth date; to visit for a birthday hug after lunch and shopping. This would mean arriving at her door about 1:00 p.m., allowing for all stops and errands en route giving me plenty of time to meditate, do yoga and ablute before leaving for the city.

As I would now be going alone, there were fewer stops, so I phoned ahead to see if I could kidnap her for lunch at noon. She was already making lunch to suit her diet and welcomed me to join her. We enjoyed a most delicious, healthy chicken soup with multi grain crackers and herbal tea, but most of all we enjoyed just being together. There are always lots of words, but they are not necessary, tea and hugs or wine and hugs do wonders to nourish our spirit.

We don’t get to see each other as often as we did when she lived at the end of my street and our trips to the city are quite infrequent and even less so in the Winter. Then there are our respective schedules, work and family obligations which make getting together a feat to coordinate. Still, today the planets lined up and we were able to have lunch at her house with various family members drifting in and out getting lots of birthday hugs in, even if it was a few days after our birthday. Those hugs say and reinforce that distance doesn’t matter, we have a bond and a friendship and we’ll be there for each other, if just with a phone call, or a quick cup of tea, no matter what.

Our 2 hours flew by so quickly, but will nourish me and be the wind beneath my wings for a long time to come. I left her house with a spring in my step, into the warm sunny day, finishing my errands without incident, ticking every last one off the list, arriving home just in time for Leihla’s supper, with treats in hand for “Daddy”, Leihla and Scampy from a very happy “Mummy”.  What a lovely way to spend the day.

Thank you my birthday sister for always topping up my energy and nourishing my spirit. I love you, Sis and Happy, Happy Birthday. May you always feel as loved and appreciated as you make me feel every time I connect with you.

Bev & I on Patsy's pontoon

Another one of those days when she called on the spur of the moment to join her for a boat ride on her sister’s pontoon September 2012

I just had to share my joy and my gratitude for the blessings in my life. My wish for every one is that they have at least one true friend like mine. If you have more than one, you are truly blessed.

Until next time, hug your friends and loved ones. Tell them you love them.

Joyful blessings to you,

  • I was just going through my notes on our recent 21-Day Perfect Health meditation with Oprah Winfrey and Deepak Chopra and had to add quotes from each of them on day 12 when we meditated on Connecting For Balance…

Connecting for balance. As social beings, which we all are, we need to feel deeply connected with others to thrive. That connection in its many forms is essential for our overall well being. ~ Oprah Winfrey

To maintain optimum health, we need to connect with one another. In general, when we socialize, chatting in line at the grocery store, engaging in family activities, taking an exercise class, or sharing a delicious meal with friends, we’re doing wonderful things for our brains can cardiovascular systems.

Furthermore as we embrace a changing world and new technologies, remember that while they’re a wonderful enhancement of our lives, they can’t completely replace physical contact. As humans we need and enjoy connecting the old fashioned way. Through eye contact, hugs and kisses. Regardless of how we stay in touch, what matters most is that we cherish our loved ones, offering them appreciation, affection and a helping hand when they need it. Through isolation we whither but in community we collectively experience a deep sense of belonging, purpose, and joy. ~ Deepak Chopra
